CANDLES offers 'Field Trip Stimulus' for 2009-2010 school year!
Budget cutbacks caused by the economic downturn result in fewer field trips. But education about hatred and prejudice is most needed in times like these! Therefore, CANDLES will assist a limited number of teachers in making a field trip to the museum possible in 2009-2010! As a teacher, if your field trip budget has been affected by cutbacks and you would like to bring your class to the museum, contact us ASAP to apply for assistance. Scholarships will be awarded on a rolling basis until the fund is depleted, so apply now to reserve funds for your class! If you are interested, email kiel@candlesholocaustmuseum.org with a description of your students, your Holocaust curriculum, and your needs.
Veteran CANDLES Docent Now Available to Speak to Schools
Walter Sommers, an excellent docent at CANDLES Holocaust Museum, is now available to travel to schools within 30 minutes of Terre Haute. He will donate all speaking fees to CANDLES. Walter was born in Germany in 1920 and was witness to the Kristallnacht attacks of November 9, 1938. These attacks signaled the beginning of the Holocaust. Walter's Jewish family managed to immigrate to the United States shortly after the attacks to start their lives over in New York City. Mr. Sommers also enlisted in the US Army and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Walter considers himself "a student of the Holocaust" and is a skilled speaker to high school and college groups. If you are interested in bringing Walter Sommers to your school, you may email him at Wallou134(at)aol.com or contact info@candlesholocaustmuseum.org
